Work featured in 2 Bridges Review

I was excited to return from a week of holiday travels to find 2 Bridges Review in my mailbox!  My photographic work, Entering, is featured on page 193.

About The 2 Bridges Review

The celebrated East River Bridges (Two Bridges) – the Brooklyn and the Manhattan, connect downtown Brooklyn with downtown Manhattan. Between these bridges a community of writers and artists has found a home in the former warehouses and factories of New York’s most literary outer borough. Like the artists who make it, the art that lives in these narrow streets goes on its nerve, and we, nerved with newness – and just a bit nervy – want to fill our pages with a distinctive, eclectic assortment of work by both unknown & established writers and artists.

Fall 2012 Semester Round-Up

My final exams are complete!  I just finished my first semester at West Virginia Wesleyan College as an Assistant Professor in the Art Department.  I taught two sections of Drawing I and one section of Painting I.  The painting students had a great time on a field trip to DC, which I led (and drove the 15-passenger van - oy).

Other fun news from this semester: our faculty put together a new department website - you should check it out.  I've also been busy proposing new curriculum for our foundations courses and the Intermedia concentration, and it sounds like things are set to go through as of spring (fingers are crossed).

Looking ahead, I'm excited to be teaching my first Intermedia course at WVWC in the spring (think performance art, installation, and video) as well as some more advanced drawing and painting courses.
Happy Holidays!

This photographic exhibition explores and juxtaposes the idea of humankind's harmonious existence with nature alongside its inescapable tendency to dominate and master its environment, controlling it for its own needs. While Ellen Mueller concentrates on issues of intrusion upon nature by focusing on manifest destiny through the lens of satire with her photography, David Luke conversely reveals the thoughtful connection between humankind and its environment through photographic diptychs which pair food sources with a complimentary water source. Though different in approach, both artists congruently create a discourse for us, highlighting our differing relationship with Nature.

Billboard Art Project in Atlanta GA

This photo was taken in Duluth MN, 2011
... it might be the work on display in Atlanta!
I just received notice that my image(s) from a previous Billboard Art Project show have been selected to be included in a special, week long segment of The Billboard Art Project's current Atlanta show. Guest curator Katerina Lanfranco has included my work in Color Shift, her personal selection of images that will run for the next week, October 13 - 19.

I'm not sure which images will be there (perhaps the one pictured here?), but if you're in Atlanta, it's definitely worth checking out!

The Sleeth Gallery is located on the first floor of McCuskey Hall at West Virginia Wesleyan College, at the intersection of East Main Street and College Avenue in Buckhannon, WV.

Mueller — an intermedia artist — focuses on humans' resistance to change and a struggle for control. How these efforts display themselves is the subject of the works collected in this exhibition, which includes large-scale paintings and video works. Recurrent visual themes include corporate management structures, cult dynamics, and Sisyphean tasks. Although these works share many specific, personal associations and a dry sense of humor, the audience is invited to develop personal narratives and explanations for each piece.

"Practical Preparedness: How to Navigate a Riot" is currently featured on Liminalities: A Journal of Performance Studies, an open-access, peer-reviewed online publication that addresses three needs in performance studies scholarship and practice: 1) expanding opportunities to share peer-reviewed work, 2) creating a space for the publication of multimedia texts and projects that are difficult or impossible to publish in traditional print venues, and 3) international accessibility.

LOL in Sweden

art:screen has been invited to curate a screening program on the theme 'LoL' (Laughing out Loud) for Onskoldsviks Museum & Konsthall 'Black box', Örnsköldsvik, Sweden from September 18 - October 5, 2012.

The program consists of works from art:screen’s archive. My video 'Preparing for Bioterrorism' has been selected and will be shown during the event.

art:screen is a platform that showcases new, compelling, innovative and contemporary video art and moving image from Swedish and international artists. art:screen is, for many artists, the window for showing their work in Sweden and Europe.

art:screen shows single-channel screening programmes which have tempo and flow. To create this, the duration of works are at maximum five minutes long. The programmes explore new ways of seeing reality from a cultural, social and individual perspective and often employ humour to give new insights.

art:screen is an artist-run, non-profit initiative organised by Eva Olsson and Jonas Nilsson who are both practising professional artists with an extensive experience of curating screening programmes.

17 Tips Project

I started a new endeavor: 17 Tips Project.

For this project, I invite artists to create works in reaction to each of William Powhida's 17 tips for selling art. I'll post a tip/prompt each week, starting at the top of his list, and working our way through (you can also work ahead/catch up as needed, but the project will close on October 6th). I am making a catalog of the results (and perhaps will put up an exhibition... we'll see).

To participate, make 1 work of art (any medium) for each tip (that's 17 works - ambitious!), and email me a print-quality image of each work (at least 5 inches on widest dimension and 300dpi), the title, medium, dimensions, and date. I'll also post the images to this blog as I receive them.

Feel free to invite others :)  Here's the Facebook Group.

More Photos From Ucross

There were always deer around, and they had hilariously long white tails.
This is just a funny sign.
Everyday on the way to the studio, I'd ride my bike down 'Big Red' Lane.
More views from evening walks.
The Rockies were much snowier here than in Pueblo (obviously).
