Myvatn Hiking Trip

I took this hiking trip almost two weeks ago, but have been shooting and editing videos like crazy. Thus, my tardiness!

This is a small lake of geothermal water next to the
powerplant in Myvatn - the turquoise is surreal!

This giant crater was fun to walk around - we traveled the entire rim.

This might have been my favorite hike - the ground was still
steaming and hot in places from a volcanic eruption
a couple decades ago!

The mud pots were really cool to check out (also stinky).
I wanted to touch them so bad, but we were warned many times
that they are boiling hot...

Northern Iceland Excursion

On a recent trip around northern Iceland, I took a ton of photos that will be excellent inspiration material for projects!
Day 1: We took a boat to Drangey Island, learned about Grettir's Saga, hiked around, and ended the day at the Myvatn Nature Baths (good end to the day).

Drangey Island - so many Puffins!

Day 2: We went on a whale watching expedition, hiked around the Dimmuborgir lava formations and the Godafoss waterfall.

While I'm here I'll be working on a series of drawings about melting glaciers, and continuing a series of performances I started in January.

"Book of Enid" in Hungary

Book of Enid will be featured in the "5th International Artists’ Book Exhibition 2013" at the King St. Stephen Museum, in collaboration with the City Gallery Deak Collection in Szekesfehervar, Hungary.

5th International Artists’ Book Exhibition 2013
May 18 – October, 2013
HUNGARY

King St. Stephen Museum in Székesfehérvár, Hungary is a county museum with a range of rich collections (archaeology, ethnography, local history, modern and contemporary art). The city is about 60 kilometers from Budapest. The museum started to work in the field of artists’ books twenty-five years ago.

In 1987 we organized the First International Artists’ Book Exhibition. There were about 300 works presented and later donated to the museum by the artists, thus establishing the first and still the only artists’ book collection in Hungary owned by a museum. As the years went by, our collection increased and we entered into relations with artists, archives and centers (e.g. Franklin Furnace Archives, New York and Guy Bleus’s Administration Centre, Wellen).

Call for panelists at SECAC 2013!

I just found out my panel on "Performing Help" was accepted to the Southeast College Art Conference :) Now the challenge is finding people who want to present on my panel. Here's the description:
----------------------------------------------
SECAC 2013: Examining Artists Satirically Performing Help or Instruction
Call For Papers; Deadline: 04-20-2013

*Performing Help*
The idea of social practice has been widely discussed in the field of performance art, with scholars such as Nicolas Bourriaud and Shannon Jackson examining subversive resistance to social conformity. However, these perspectives have not specifically or directly addressed the growing collection of artists satirically performing help or instruction as social critique. This panel will examine these artists, their inspiration, creative approaches, and methods of disseminating work. Specific examples of the types of work this panel will examine include Stephen Colbert's "Colbert Super Pac"
http://www.mediabistro.com/tvspy/files/2012/01/StephenColbert_SuperPAC_show.jpg

or the collective "Goatsilk," and their "Killin' It! with Paul Krik" series,

http://paulcrik.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/logo.png

as well as their "Tea Party Artists" series,

http://www.teapartyartists.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/screen-capture-11-319x178.jpg

with attention turned towards these artists' impulses and tactics for creating and disseminating advice. Panelists are invited to compare these, and similar bodies of work, to other artists working in this vein. In examining this growing collection of work, we will shed light on this little recognized corner of artistic practice.

Session chair: Ellen Mueller, West Virginia Wesleyan College. Contact: mueller_e@wvwc.edu
Abstracts, maximum of 200 words, should be prepared before you complete the online paper proposal form at http://goo.gl/KtjAN
Please additionally send CV to mueller_e@wvwc.edu
----------------------------------------------
If you're interested, please feel free to submit a paper proposal, and if you can think of others that might be interested, please spread the word - I want to make sure I get enough people :)
The conference is in Greensboro NC, October 30-November 2, 2013.

Thanks!

The Sleeth Gallery will be kicking off its Spring 2013 exhibition schedule with the inaugural WVWC Art Faculty Biennale, running from January 15 – 31, 2013. The gallery is open Monday – Friday by appointment and admission is free.

This exhibition is an opportunity for students to see and engage with art made by their professors and instructors, and for the community-at-large to view the range of visual and multimedia arts produced and taught by WVWC faculty. The WVWC Art Department is a steadily growing program, offering concentrations in painting and drawing, photography, graphic design and intermedia.
