Live Footage from Performance Art Institute

This live performance of "Navigating a Riot" at "Micromanagement," an evening of performance curated by Sean Fletcher and Isabel Reichert, took place October 15, 2011 at the Performance Art Institute in San Francisco, CA.

The performance consisted of a PowerPoint presentation covering step-by-step instructions for navigating any riot situation, an instruction card for each audience member, and audience participation. I performed as the helpful “Practical Preparedness” guide from my series of videos of the same name. After viewing the presentation, I told the audience to take up their instruction cards, and follow along with basic movements as we went through the top ten tips for navigating a riot.

This body of work focuses on the fear generated by a chaotic world of non-stop technological revolution, impending global climate change, and hyperactive news media. I use humor and absurdist situations as a method for dealing with these challenging topics in an indirect way, resulting in an element of escapism.

At its most basic, art has always been about storytelling, from cave painters describing a hunt for food to church frescoes narrating the lives of saints. As technology has quickened the pace, however, the nature of storytelling has changed. Lives are broadcast to the world through blogs, vlogs, tweets, and posts; even the news is packaged and sold as “stories,” with editorial agendas often barely disguised. In this cacophony of subjectivity, it’s now assumed that there are two sides (at least) to every story. In a world like this, who knows what to believe?

Artists, Megan Hildebrandt, Sara Holwerda, Sarah Kelly, Ellen Mueller, and Christine Sajecki play in this new landscape of storytelling, adding a few nails to the coffin of the “official” voice, jumping off the diving board of satire, and perhaps – just perhaps – suggesting that art offers the best way through. Artists, after all, have long embraced subjectivity, fortified with skill and self-awareness.

9/11 Memorial Exhibit

If you will be in Reading PA between November 6 and December 15th, swing by the Freyberger Gallery on the Penn State Berks campus. Five of my Practical Preparedness videos will be on view.

In honoring the 10th Anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, and the heroes who have fallen, the families torn apart, and those volunteers who gave hours of their time to help, the Freyberger Gallery, Penn State Berks is hosting a multi-venue exhibition.

Part 1: Crises/Reaction (Sept. 11 through Oct. 20) and

Part 2: Response/Healing (Nov. 6 through Dec. 16, 2011).

Over 80 artists submitted work for the exhibition with 40 selected. The Jewish Community Center located at 1100 Berkshire Blvd., and Penn State Lehigh Valley are partnering to exhibit work for this important event. Refreshments will be served at the reception on Sunday Nov. 6, at 4 p.m. where guest speakers will include:

An evening of 16 experimental performance artists with an overbearing interest in their audience

San Francisco, CA – conceptual artist duo Sean Fletcher and Isabel Reichert present MICROMANAGEMENT, an evening of performative artworks by 16 artists from around the world. Artists participating in the exhibition include CNS (Mabel Negrete and Timothy E Robertson II), Jordan Essoe, Peter Foucault, Jennifer Gwirtz, Barbara Kristoff, Anya Liftig, Cheryl Meeker and Dan Spencer, Ellen Mueller, Naomi Sex, Ann Marie Stoehr, Merav Tzur, Kathryn Williamson, Kathrine Worel, and Gordon Winiemko.

Micromanagement is characterized by close observation and control over someone else’s work, frequently accompanied by an acute focus on minor details, to the point where it often seems more an matter of control than the successful realization of a project. The artists of MICROMANAGEMENT will spend the evening “observing, controlling, attending to minutia, and insisting on results.” These artists impose double binds, they question our competence, they exploit our fears, they set us up to fail. Through performances, temporary installations, and sound works, the artists in MICROMANAGEMENT provide a dynamic evening of work that is compulsive, manipulative, overbearing, and always completely brilliant.

Ellen Mueller delivers a “Practical Preparedness” demonstration speech and guides the audience through the proper way to navigate a mob situation. Peter Foucault manipulates a small sensor-activated artist/robot using sound and percussion. Gordon Winiemko edits, rewrites, rephrases, and “micromanages” the efforts of curators Sean and Isabel, for a contribution that is in dialogue with the event itself.

A Decade On: Artists Respond to 9/11 at the Playwright's Center

Tampa's Neighborhood Watch: A Projection Walk

Neighborhood Watch will take place Saturday, August 27 in Hampton Terrace (link to map) a division of Seminal Heights Neighborhood in Tampa FL. The walk will begin at 1400 Comanche, and wrap around to 1221 Powhattan. This is a one-night-only art exhibition running 8:30 PM - 11:30 PM. Admission is free.

For one night only, Hampton Terrace is transformed into an alternative exhibition space. Various forms of Fine Art will be projected throughout the neighborhood. Over 25 local, national, and international artists will be featured in this exhibition.

The Neighborhood Watch was originally designed after the classical all American drive-in theatre, and aimed to share art by creating an accessible space outside of the traditional museum setting. For the past five years this event has been exchanging and projecting artwork in various neighborhoods and in multiple countries. Participating countries are Bhutan, Australia, France, Mexico and cities in the United States including Tampa Florida. The Neighborhood Watch is a global simultaneous one-night event of projected art, performance, and sculpture brought to your own lawn.

Mapping Exhibition

If you're going to be in Portland, Oregon on Friday, June 17, 2011, then be sure to swing by the 100th Monkey Studio to check out three pieces from my latest series, "Greetings From Tampa."

This series explores various aspects of Tampa's geography and culture. During my time in Tampa, I experienced both expected and unexpected shifts in social constructs, transportation, climate, and environment. In attempting to map Tampa via memory and isolated imagery, I focus on non-monumental landmarks, such as House of Meats and Red Lobster, as well as ephemeral items including road kill and glimpses of roller coasters. Comparisons arise between tourist culture and run-down commercial areas, waterfowl and sign-spinners, and strip malls and palm trees, all of which coexist on a daily basis.

Vermont Studio Center

I've been in Johnson, Vermont for a whole week already! I'm here for a 4-week artist residency with Vermont Studio Center. It's been a really great experience so far. All our needs are attended to - they feed us amazing food 3 times a day, there's a linen service, and they provide fun distractions in the form of artist slide nights, visiting artist talks, and writer reading nights.

I basically get up, eat breakfast, work in the studio, eat lunch, work in an office for 2 hours (that's my work-study job), and then make more work before dinner, eat, then work into the evening or go to whatever events are happening. There are about 50 artists and writers here, so I'm meeting all kinds of interesting people.

If I get antsy, I can go for a beautiful walk (it is Vermont after all). If you're interested in more photos, check out this album. I'll post pics of the drawings I'm working on soon.

Waiting Room Performance Piece In Need of Actors

TAMPA, FL – Open auditions for a waiting room performance piece are occurring Friday, March 11, 2011, 6pm-7pm, at University of South Florida FAH (Arts Building) room 280. The performance piece involves standing in line at a faux waiting room for 2 hours. All ages/genders are welcome to audition; we are looking for a wide variety of people. No prepared material is necessary, although auditioners will be asked to present three behaviors of their choosing related to waiting in line. Please bring a head shot or photograph of your face, and a brief resume or list of past performance experience.

Actors will be paid $20 for the performance and one dress rehearsal. The performance is Friday, April 1, 2011, 7pm-9pm at the USF Contemporary Art Museum in Tampa, FL. The dress rehearsal will be scheduled during the week of March 21-25 according to actor availability. Anyone auditioning must be available for both a dress rehearsal and the entire scheduled performance time.

My work was just installed at the USF College of Engineering in their main offices in the Engineering II building.

If you go in the main entrance (north) of Engineering II, walk to the back hallway and take a left. The main office (includes the Dean's office) will be a few doors down on your right. There is a receptionist at the front desk and you can explain you'd like to see the work by Ellen Mueller. If you walk past the reception area to the back hallway and turn to the left, you will see "Sustainable Fanaticism in America" installed as a series.

I am performing a reading of my latest work, the "Book Of Enid," at the Shimberg Playhouse, located at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts, at 11pm on Friday, February 18, 2011. So I've dropped off the radar a bit in the past few months, but it's because I've been keeping very busy preparing for the MFA exhibition that opens April 1, 2011. As a part of my contribution to that show, I'm not only finishing up Book of Enid, but I have also started working on a series of videos, Practical Preparedness, which I've started posting on my Vimeo account. I use humor and absurdist situations as a method for dealing with these challenging topics in an indirect way, leaning on an element of escapism.

Pages: Book as Medium, Catalyst, Venue is an exhibition that celebrates the diversity of thought, process, and experience that can be revealed or inspired via the book. All of the artists in this show draw inspiration from books in some way, and as a collection the work demonstrates the potential of the book in art-making, as a subject, tool, material, and/or springboard for other work.

For some artists in the show, the book is an inexpensive, unpretentious venue that one can carry anywhere and work on at any given moment. For others, it is appreciated for its relationship to story and narrative, or for its nature as a multiple, to be published and distributed widely. Still others use the book as raw material to carve or sculpt, fascinated by its capacity to reveal secrets one page (or layer) at a time. Some see the book as a record of facts, used to document process and discoveries.

This exhibition will include all kinds of artist books, ranging widely in format and purpose. The hope is to present the book as an opportunity—as an entry point to one's own art practice, as a catalyst to new and evolved work, and as an object that even in an age of digital media still carries a certain aura of the limitless potential of all the worlds possibly contained within its pages.

Pages features the work of artists from the Kansas City area and around the country, including emerging as well as established artists. As part of the exhibition, Paragraph will include a "reading room" of work shown in a library-like setting, where visitors will be encouraged to engage in browsing artists’ books, sketchbooks, and zines.

New Media and Installation Art Show Transforms the Beautiful Tampa Armature Works Building

Tampa, FL – REFRACTORY will take place Friday, October 15 at the former Tampa Armature Works building in Tampa Heights (1910 N Ola Ave). This special, one-night-only show runs from 8PM – 11PM. Admission to the show is a suggested donation of $5.

For one night only, an abandoned factory on the Hillsborough River will be transformed into a kaleidoscope of moving images and media art in an exhibition that engages the historic nature of the building and explores the interstitial space between. This beautiful industrial setting will be the backdrop for more than a dozen local and national new media and video artists. Add to this the installation of the largest Dream Machine ever constructed and you’ve got an amazing visual experience and artistic product that may be the most exciting art event of the Fall season.
Featured artists include Robert Chambers, Genesis P. Orridge, Richard Kern, Gerhardt Gruen, James Johnson, Clem Crowder, FaFa, Gean Moreno, Michael LeMieux, Kurt Piazza, Robb Flandry, Brian Taylor, Noelle Mason and Ellen Mueller.

Some highlights of REFRACTORY include:

Dream Machine Installation A stroboscopic flicker device pioneered by the late artist Brion Gysin comes to life in massive proportions. While originally designed as a table-top meditative device, this version is a giant pillar of moving light that creates a striking visual display.

Genesis P. Orridge Recently retired from his involvement with Psychic TV and Throbbing Gristle, musician and artist Genesis P. Orridge is a contemporary of Brion Gysin and William S. Borroughs and has spent recent years focusing on art and writing. Orridge is represented by New York gallery Invisible-Exports

Robert Chambers Best known for his contemporary sculptural installations, the art of Robert Chambers has been exhibited across the country at locations including Miami, Philadelphia, and New York. He has been featured in Art in America, artnet and Arte al Dia and has work in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York City.

Sound Installation by Tetromino Sound artists John Russell and Yousef Danak team up to create a site-specific sound installation piece based on the cut-up technique of William S. Burroughs, Brion Gysin, and other Beat Hotel-era artists.

REFRACTORY is organized by a collaborative of well known Tampa Bay cultural activists including Ken Cowart, Joe Griffith, and T. Hampton Dohrman with assistance from Adam Kitzerow, Gregory Green and Bradley Askew. I am looking for filmmakers of all levels of experience to help in a collaborative video project. I have a script divided into short scenes, and I would like a different person/group to shoot each scene. In the end, I will be editing all the scenes together to create the entire script. Filmmakers have total creative freedom to use whatever medium they like (digital video, stop-motion animation, clay animation, puppets, actors, real or imaginary props/costumes/settings, etc). All participants will be given credit for their work.

The script is very fantastical and follows the time traveling main character, Enid, as she attempts to stop a violent action before it occurs. The scene breakdown, as well as character profiles can be found here.

I will need something from you to create the end product - a miniDV tape, DVD, a file, etc.

I am looking for artists and non-artists of all levels of experience to help in a collaborative art project. I would like to gather as many depictions of five characters as possible. Profiles of these characters can be found here. These characters can be depicted in two or three dimensions. I will print images of these depictions and decorate an altar-like space where people will be able to sit and watch a movie about the characters. Some of the images may be integrated into the afore mentioned movie. All participants will be given credit for their work.

Please scan or take a photo of your work. The recommended file formats are PSD, AI or TIFF. The recommended resolution is 1024x768 or 300 DPI and at least 2.75"x3.75".

I just put together this piece for "The Things I Dream About," which is an upcoming exhibition at the Brooklyn Art Library. Artists were prompted to create a piece no larger that 4"x6" using your dreams as inspiration.

TEMPUS PROJECTS brings these artists together for a playful event featuring a varity of t-shirts and posters. This exhibition will debut at TEMPUS PROJECTS in South Seminole Heights located on the back lot of 5132 Florida Ave Tampa, FL 33603. All of the features desgins will be available for purchase at fair prices. Support the local art community! More on these artists will soon to be posted at www.tempus-projects.com

In the courtyard: TEMPUS PROJECTS hosts an open air happening of handmade goods in a one night venders market. Pick up quality goods from local craftsmen like Audrey Garber, Lesley Stuart Tinnaro and Scott Dias.

The Opening Reception for this exhibition will be held on Friday May 14, 2010 from 7pm till 10pm with music, refreshments and light hors d'oeuvres.

The event is free and open to the public but donations are greatly appreciated. The exhibition runs through April 9th, 2010 with gallery hours by appointment. Classes and groups are encouraged and welcomed.

I just got back from a 5-day trip to NYC for class research. Here's a quick run-down of the highlights:

- Fuerza Bruta is a great performance running at the Roth Theater. If you can, you MUST see it!

- MoMA is showing two very thought-provoking exhibitions: William Kentridge: Five Themes, and Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present. Again, if you can, you should go see them.

- Amy's Bread and The Milk Bar at Chelsea Market make me happy. Heck, Chelsea Market makes me happy.

- Oh Katz's Deli, you have large expensive sandwiches, but they're soooooo good...

- Check out the carousel at Luhring Augustine Gallery if you get the chance before May 1st.

As part of an upcoming exhibition, artists are invited to participate by creating trading card designs for The Fitcilitator, a superhero who helps people of all ages pass the President's Fitness Challenge.

The front of the card should feature an image of The Fitcilitator, and the back should have some sort of accompanying text, whether it is recounting a piece back-story about The Fitcilitator (powers, weaknesses, nemeses, alter ego, side kick, lair, etc), some important statistics, or something else entirely. Artists have the freedom to make up anything they like. The only known facts about The Fitcilitator include her attire (see reference photo album listed below) and her goal, which is helping people with the President's Challenge.

The 10 best cards will be published as a limited edition set of trading cards, and those 10 artist will receive a set of the trading cards, while the top 25 designs will be published in an exhibition catalog. The trading cards measure 2.5"x3.5". Your image file should measure 2.75"x3.75" and allow .125" on each side for trim. The recommended file formats are PSD, AI or TIFF. The recommended resolution is 1024x768 or 300 DPI at 2.75"x3.75".

The '2nd Annual MFAO Silent Art Auction' is a fundraising event for the Master of Fine Arts Organization at USF to help raise funds for MFAO's future endeavors. The auction will feature works in a variety of media including photography, prints, sculpture, drawings, and paintings.

Early-Bird Bidding will be open from 10am-5pm on Friday, March 26 for USF faculty, staff, and VIPs. Public Bidding will be open 5pm-10pm on Friday, March 26, concurrent with ARTHOUSE, an annual arts event produced by the School of Art and Art History at USF. MFAO can accept cash or check only.

"Night Depository" incarnation at Centre Gallery

A version of "Night Depository" will be on view at the Centre Gallery as a part of the 34th Annual USF Juried Student Art Exhibition.

The juror was Sean Miller, an internationally exhibiting multidisciplinary artist. His work explores situations, practices, and information that sustain and define existing power structures in contemporary art and politics.

The reception and awards ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 26 in front of the USF Contemporary Art Museum. Following the ceremony, the 12th Annual ArtHouse will be held from 8 to 11 p.m. at the School of Art & Art History.

ONE Art Exhibition

The opening reception will take place on Friday, January 29th at 7 P.M.

MOSI will be hosting the ONE exhibition in the second floor ARC Gallery. ONE is a multimedia art exhibition that explores the concept of “one”. “One”, as a number, refers to the integer before two and after zero. It could also be perceived as unity or an ideological force, such as narcissism, capitalism or monotheism. Many facets explore the singular; a sole aim, a single life, a solitaire game.

Admission to the exhibition is included in MOSI general admission. The ARC Gallery is located on MOSI's 2nd floor and surrounds the IMAX® Dome Theatre.

Cool news - I can now say I've been published in the UK!

The field guide from Three Mouth-Light Arrays to Counter Frightful Darkness, a collaborative piece I worked on with Phil McCollam, is being published in The Wild Pansy Press Book of Rainy Day Activities, and will be available for free at "Crunchtime2010"

The Wild Pansy Press has produced a publication in which a range of contributors make concrete suggestions for new cultural activities in a Post-Crunch society, with an emphasis on the practical, the cheap and the sustainable. You can read more about this exciting project, and the artists involved at this link.

"Crunchtime2010" is a festival taking place in the City of York, UK, January 29th - February 6th, 2010. Global issues and concerns are increasingly on the minds of everyone. Using a variety of venues as galleries and the city's sites and streets for projects, "Crunchtime2010" offers a snapshot of artists’ responses to the issues of living in the early 21st century. Step 2: Make a mold of the fish (I vacuum-formed the wood fish in 2 pieces because our vacuum-former was not big enough to do the whole thing at once, and then taped the halves together and embedded them in plaster for sturdiness)

Step 3: Pour chocolate into the mold, let cool completely, and pull out a chocolate fish!

Step 4: Decorate with little chocolate disks that look like scales.

Step 5: Give the trophy away to people that will eat it!

1st Annual Black & White Sustainability Mixer & Recognition Ceremony
Get talking about sustainability, and recognize leaders!

TAMPA, FL – The 1st Annual Black & White Sustainability Mixer & Recognition Ceremony will take place October 16, 2009 at 8:30pm at the University of South Florida Marshall Student Center, room 2708. Black and white attire is encouraged, but not required. There is no cost to attend this event. Free refreshments will be provided, and door prizes will be dispensed. This event is funded in part by a USF Graduate Student Challenge Grant.

The purpose of this event is to get members of the Tampa Bay community talking about sustainability with each other, and to recognize exemplary achievements by sustainability-minded people. By recognizing our awareness in each other, we will cultivate stronger support for sustainability in ourselves and others.

MFAO Exhibition at Centre Gallery

Yesterday I helped install the new Master of Fine Arts Organization group exhibition of recent and new member works at the USF Centre Gallery (runs September 7–18, 2009). Centre Gallery is the University of South Florida’s student-run gallery located in room 2700 on the second floor of USF’s Marshall Student Center. Gallery hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Admission is free.

Exhibiting artists include Toni Billick , Ariel Baron-Robbins , Bruce Monroe , Biff Bolen , Chris Otten , Cindy Mason , Ellen Mueller , Jordi Williams , Khadijah Queen , Lin Li , Maria Bevilacqua , Maxim Maximovitch, Megan Hildebrandt , Ryan Foster, Robb Fladry , Serhat Tanyolacar, and Taylor Pilote.

Open Auditions - August 22, 2009

Open auditions for two original performance works are occurring August 22, 2009, 2:00pm - 4:00pm, at University of South Florida FAH (Arts Building) room 280. No prepared material is necessary, although if you have a monologue or other performance you'd like to present, please feel free. Auditions will last no longer than 5-10 minutes each. Please bring a head shot or photograph of your face, and a brief resume or list of past performance experience.

The performances will occur in the evenings of October 2 and 16, 2009. Anyone auditioning must be available for at least one of these performances.

Final week of Physical Theatre Intensive

The intensive wrapped up with a week focusing on clown, which was very fun and interesting because I've seen many clown performances, but had little idea how they came to be. The DAI website describes it as:

Week 4 : THE DRAMATIC REALMS: Clown & Comic Archetypes
Coming full circle from the cleansing work of The Showers, the actor researches an organic, non-traditional personage to find the play of failure. Clown lives not just in eccentric behavior, but also in authentic play in concert with its partners, for the audience. Work in duos, trios.

Our assignment for the week was to partner up and create a scene where you are clown presenting something for the audience, but you flop (fail). My partner and I presented a super-fast version of Rapunzel. Here's a couple somewhat blurry pics from that endeavor (my nose was slipping off for most of it!).

We also continued our work with acrobatics, and I successfully stood on two people's shoulders, which was awesome! I don't have any photo evidence, but you can take my word for it ;) Here's a fun picture of everyone in the workshop:

It was a great workshop with great people, and I learn a ton! I'm so glad I went...

Week 3 of the Physical Intensive - Comedy and Acrobatics

Week 3: THE DRAMATIC REALMS: The Human Comedy
With a focus on craft-- rhythm, timing, partnership, entrance/exit, dynamics, the mask and more – this week engages the atypical playing of comic types through work on theme and the timeless situations of the human comedy.

We've spent the week with an acrobatics session and 'games' session every morning, and a comedy and mask session every afternoon. I have to thank Minneapolis' Brave New Institute for superbly preparing me for the 'games' section because it was a bunch of improv! It was one of the few parts of the workshop so far where I've felt like I know what's going on.

In addition to all this class work, we also had to present a fictional infomercial today. This was a super fun project and was ten times easier than the tragedy project last week. Here's the least blurry pic I could get my hands on (we were selling a product called "Gap-B-Gone" which was for those unfortunate gaps that can occur at the beach or with low-rise pants):

And here are a couple videos of me doing my new acrobat tricks (not too fancy, just rolls and a cartwheel, but exciting none the less, having dramatically exited the world of gymnastics at the age of 6, only to re-enter 21 years later!)

Physical Intensive Workshop so far...

Here I am, already finished with the first two weeks of this four-week Physical Theatre Intensive workshop! Time is flying by.

Dell'Arte International describes the weeks best on their website:

Week 1 : “NEVER TOO CLEAN”
The essential work of Dell’Arte founder Carlo Mazzone-Clementi, known as “The Showers,” because “you are never too clean to do them.” Through this set of structured improvisations -- open, non-psychological play in the empty space of the stage, the cleansing of unnecessary habits -- the actor becomes a more powerful presence. The Showers are complimented by the FM Alexander Technique in vocal/physical work and by movement training with Donlin Foreman.

Week one was all about raising self-awareness for me, and a very good reminder of the hard work it takes to maintain quality work as an actor.

Week 2: THE DRAMATIC REALMS: Melodrama Through Tragedy
The training proceeds as presence becomes intention; energy becomes action. The actor in the space; explorations in space, time, rhythms, music and visual forms; the poetic dimension of the protagonist or tragic hero(ine), epic and sacrifice. Melodrama teaches us about heightened stakes—“Life, ramped” (actor Ethan Hawke).

Week two consisted of tragedy and melodrama work. I was assigned to a group of 5 people, and we developed movement to accompany the tragic poem, The Cold Heaven, by Yeats. If you're not familiar with the poem, feel free to check out this YouTube video of it.

Next week is comedy, and the last week is clown. I'll try to get more photos of the workshop participants, including myself, so keep an eye out!
